The Perfect Terracotta Blend

Creating the ideal environment for plant roots begins long before a seed is sown; it starts with the earth itself. Standard commercial terracotta, while beautiful, often prioritizes manufacturing efficiency over botanical utility. By formulating your own clay body, you regain control over porosity.

Our studio blend incorporates a higher percentage of grog (fired, ground clay) than typical mixes. This strategic addition opens up the internal structure of the fired vessel. When a plant is watered, this porous network allows excess moisture to evaporate through the walls, mimicking the natural drying cycles plants experience in the wild.

The Ratio

We typically work with a ratio of 70% fine earthenware clay to 30% medium grog. This mixture requires more physical effort to wedge and center on the wheel, as the grog introduces texture, but the resulting breathability is unparalleled for susceptible root systems.

When designing these forms, we strip away decorative rims, ornate glazing, and unnecessary curves. The focus shifts entirely to proportion, wall thickness, and the raw texture of the material itself.

A vessel with sharp, 90-degree internal angles can sometimes challenge proper drainage. To mitigate this, our minimalist cylinders feature a subtle internal slope toward the drainage aperture, ensuring functionality is never sacrificed for the sake of a clean exterior line.

Strategic Glazing for Moisture Control

Glaze is generally viewed purely as an aesthetic choice or a means to make a vessel food-safe. In the realm of botanical ceramics, however, glaze is a functional tool used to manipulate moisture retention.

Fully glazed pots trap moisture, which is excellent for ferns or calatheas but detrimental to succulents or aroids. Raw clay offers maximum breathability. Our approach involves 'strategic glazing'—applying glaze only where necessary.

Internal Banding: Glazing only the bottom third of the interior creates a small moisture reservoir while allowing the upper root zone to breathe.
Exterior Only: Applying a matte glaze to the outside while leaving the inside raw slows evaporation slightly without stopping it entirely.
The Lip: Glazing just the rim prevents mineral buildup from hard water, keeping the pot looking pristine while maintaining full wall porosity.

Engineering Suspended Vessels

Creating hanging clay planters requires a shift from purely aesthetic thinking to structural engineering. The primary concern is tension and weight distribution. Clay is heavy, wet soil is heavier, and a mature cascading plant adds continuous downward force.

When throwing a hanging vessel, the walls must be meticulously pulled to achieve an even thickness, minimizing unnecessary weight while maintaining structural integrity. The suspension points are critical.

Instead of merely piercing holes near the rim—which creates weak points prone to cracking under stress—we throw thickened galleries or integrated clay loops. If holes are used, they are reinforced during the leather-hard stage and positioned well below the rim to distribute the load across the thicker belly of the pot.

Decoding Kiln Temperatures

The transformation of soft earth into durable stone occurs in the intense heat of the kiln. For plant vessels, determining the correct firing temperature is a delicate balancing act between durability and porosity.

If clay is fired to complete vitrification (where it becomes glass-like and non-porous), it functions identically to a glazed or plastic pot—retaining all moisture. If fired too low, it remains excessively fragile and may slowly degrade when constantly exposed to wet soil.

Our studio earthenware is fired to Cone 04 (approximately 1945°F / 1063°C). This specific temperature ensures the chemical water is entirely driven out and the particles fuse sufficiently for everyday strength, yet the clay body remains 'open' enough to facilitate the air exchange critical for healthy root systems.
